Kathmandu: A Nepali Sherpa guide, who had been missing for nearly six days and presumed dead, has been found alive after enduring extreme conditions on Mount Everest.
According to reports, the 52-year-old Sherpa, identified as Dawa Sherpa, disappeared during a descent from the summit region around May 29 while guiding a climber. His client reportedly returned safely to base camp, but Dawa went out of contact in the hazardous “death zone,” triggering fears that he had died on the mountain.
Family members had even begun preparing for his last rites.
However, on June 4, a cleanup team from the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee discovered him near the Khumbu Icefall. He was found conscious but in a severely weakened state, suffering from frostbite and exhaustion.
Rescue personnel immediately provided food, water, and medical assistance before transporting him to Kathmandu. Doctors are now monitoring his condition, and his family has confirmed that he is recovering and able to speak.
Reports suggest that Dawa Sherpa survived alone for days without food, water, or supplemental oxygen and mountaineering officials are calling it to be an extraordinary feat of endurance.
The incident has drawn global attention, highlighting both the extreme risks faced by high-altitude guides and the unpredictable dangers of Everest’s routes, which are often considered more lethal than the ascent.
Despite a record climbing season on Everest this year, this incident stands out as one of the most extraordinary rescue and survival instances in recent memory.
