Tagging Of Olive Ridley Sea Turtles Begins In Odisha’s Ganjam
Berhampur: Tagging of Olive Ridley sea turtles resumed at Rushikulya rookery in Ganjam district. A total of 21 Olive Ridleys, 11 males and females each, were tagged at the rookery.
The tagging was resumed after the congregation of turtles started. It is a collaborative approach of Forest and Environment Department represented by Berhampur Forest Division and Zoological Survey of India (ZSI).
The tags are uniquely numbered and have details such as name of organisation, email etc. Tagging will help in finding the extent of travel and location of the turtles after congregation, nesting etc for further research on turtle behavior.
This exercise was started in Odisha in January 2021 after a span of about 25 years and 1556 turtles had been tagged during the exercise conducted by Dr Anil Mohapatra, Scientist of ZSI and team.
