Anantnag: Security forces on Monday uncovered a terrorist hideout in the Sungalan forest area of Anantnag district in South Kashmir.
The 19 Rashtriya Rifles, in coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, participated in the operation to bust the terrorist hideout. According to an official, a cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the site.
A similar operation was conducted in the same area a few years ago. On February 21, 2021, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, in collaboration with the Army, had uncovered a terrorist hideout in the Anantnag forest.
On Monday, security forces recovered three AK-56 rifles, two Chinese pistols, two Chinese grenades, a telescope, six AK magazines, two pistol magazines, and other incriminating materials from the site.
In September 2023, drones were deployed to locate terrorists who had taken shelter in the dense forested terrain of Anantnag district, as part of ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the region.
Meanwhile, security forces are continuing to comb the forests around Sanyal village in the Kathua district of Jammu, in search of at least four terrorists they engaged on Sunday evening. Sanyal is barely five km from the International Border with Pakistan.
A seven-year-old girl was injured when the terrorists opened fire on the security forces. A woman from the village also said how her husband was held at gunpoint by the terrorists.
Security forces are maintaining vigil along the district’s boundaries to prevent the terrorists from escaping. The border of the state of Jammu and Kashmir with Punjab has also been secured. On Sunday, the DGP of Jammu and Kashmir visited Kathua to take stock of the situation.
