Washington, DC: Is the US-Iran conflict that has been going on for over three months now, finally nearing its end?
While US president Donald Trump declared on Thursday that he has “ended the war with Iran”, Tehran indicated that a final decision on the matter is yet to be taken.
However, Trump’s anouncement did bring down crude oil prices by nearly 3%, stabilizing stock markets globally. In India, the Sensex jumped by nearly 900 points overnight.
While making the statement during a telephone rally for Georgia gubernatorial candidate Burt Jones, the US president said that Iran agreed they will never have nuclear weapons, as reported by WION.
Briefing the press at the White House earlier, Trump said that negotiations with Iran had reached their final stage and suggested that a deal could be signed within the next few days. The signing ceremony could take place in Europe, he said.
The Republican leader had shared a post on Truth Social before the media briefing, stating that he cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran after discussions with “highest level of Iranian leadership and approved.” The final terms and conditions have been “approved by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt”, Trump said.
“I don’t know if you heard, but we ended the war with Iran today. They have agreed never to have a nuclear weapon, something that we insisted on; that was the whole purpose. That was 95 percent of it,” the US president said In the tele rally supporting Georgia lieutenant governor Burt Jones, who is running for governor.
Iran, however, maintained that no final decision has been taken as yet. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said that the proposed understanding was still under review and had not received final approval.
“Until Iran announces the matter of a potential understanding, any news from Trump on this subject should be regarded the same as his previous messaging,” Baqaei was quoted saying according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency said.
