Lucknow: A mock drill in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich took a serious turn and led to a real-life rescue operation.
As part of preparedness ahead of monsoon season, the district administration along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local medical teams was conducting a flood relief and disaster management mock drill on Ghaghra river when a woman jumped into the river, reported PTI.
It happened around 2 pm on Thursday, when the 35-year-old woman, a resident of Jarwal Road area, jumped into the river from Sanjay Setu.
Those present at the site first thought it was part of the exercise, and a planned component of the drill. However, rescue personnel soon realised that the woman was attempting suicide.
Without delay, a rescue operation was launched. Divers and boatmen rushed into action, and it did not take long for them to safely pull the woman out of the water and bring her back to shore in a boat.
She was shifted to a community health centre for treatment.
Jarwal Road Station House Officer Santosh Kumar Singh said preliminary investigation indicates that the woman was trying to take the extreme step because of a family dispute and alleged harassment.
The woman told investigators that her husband had gone to Saudi Arabia for work after their marriage. Over time, he allegedly reduced contact with her and stopped sending money. She also alleged that her in-laws forced her to leave the house.
Based on her complaint, police registered a case against her husband and father-in-law under relevant sections, including harassment of a woman.
The father-in-law has been questioned, while the police are waiting for the return of the husband.
