Tokyo: A 30-year-old man who admitted to killing nine people after contacting them through Twitter has been sentenced to death in Japan.
In a case that sent shock waves throughout the globe, ‘Twitter killer’ Takahiro Shiraishi was arrested in 2017 after body parts were found in his flat. He later confessed that he had murdered and dismembering his victims – eight women and one man aged between 15 and 26 — he had met through the social media platform, BBC News reported.
In a one of a kind, Takahiro’s modus operandi was to lure suicidal women to his home, saying he could help them die.
Local media reported that over 400 people turned up to watch the verdict on Tuesday in a Tokyo court room which had just 16 seats for the public.
Japan is among the few developed nations which still has provision for capital punishment, thanks to public support for death penalty.
