Baripada: A Forest Guard was mauled to death by a wild elephant while he was trying to drive a herd away in the district on Monday night.
According to sources, a herd of elephants had entered the forest near Baunsuli village under Rasgovindpur forest range at night. After spotting the herd, the villagers informed the Forest officials.
Forest Guard Chandrakant Rout, who was in charge of Amarda forest beat house, went inside the forest and tried to drive the herd away. But an elephant of the herd caught hold of him and trampled him.

Later, the villagers rescued Rout after the herd left the place and rushed him to Rasgovindpur Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, the Forest Guard was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital. But, he succumbed while undergoing treatment in the hospital.
The death of Rout in the elephant’s attack has created a panic situation in the village as the herd has been moving around the forest nearby for the last few days. Apprehending attack by the elephants, the villagers have appealed to the Forest officials to drive the herd away from Rsgovindpur forest range.
