Puri: A 25-year-old woman was found dead in the swimming pool of a hotel in Odisha’s Puri on Monday night.
The deceased has been identified as Sumitra Mohapatra, a resident of Goudabada Sahi. She had allegedly gone to a hotel in Chakratirtha Road area for a dance and music performance at a bachelor party.
According to sources, the matter came to light when hotel employees spotted the body floating in the swimming pool and immediately alerted the local police. A team from the Sea Beach police station rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Puri District Headquarters Hospital for postmortem.
Sumitra’s family claimed that she was murdered after the event and her body dumped in the pool to make it look like a drowning accident. They have questioned the role of the organisers of the party and another woman, who accompanied her to the hotel, while demanding a thorough investigation to identify those responsible.
However, police have ruled out foul play at this stage. Sea Beach police station IIC Manas Chakra said that CCTV footage from the hotel showed no suspicious activity. “The evidence suggests she drowned. We are now awaiting the postmortem report,” he added.
