New Delhi: The same court which convicted Alka Lamba on May 25 in connection with a 2024 protest at Jantar Mantar, granted the Congress leader a reprieve on Saturday.
The Rouse Avenue court ordered Lamba’s release on a good conduct bond for one year. The court also directed her to furnish a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh.
Welcoming the court’s decision, Alka said she will challenge the conviction.
“I am glad that the court has said that I have always complied with the constitution and law in the 30 years of my political conduct,” she said.
The case relates to a protest over the demand for implementation of women’s reservation, held at Jantar Mantar on July 29, 2024.
According to the prosecution, Alka and others carried out the protest despite prohibitory orders being in force in the Jantar Mantar area.
A case was registered against Alka her under Sections 132, 221, 223(a) and 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after she was accused of pushing government officials, obstructing official work, disobeying lawful orders and causing obstruction on a public road.
Twelve days ago, the court framed charges against the Congress leader for assault or use of criminal force against public servants, obstruction of duty and violation of lawful orders.
Following the conviction, the Congress Women’s Wing chief had appealed for Lamba’s release on the basis of good conduct.
