Patna: The Patliputra railway station in Patna was rocked by violence and vandalism on Sunday during a protest by candidates travelling to appear for the Bihar Police Prohibition (Excise) Constable recruitment exam.

A large group of people gathered at the station in the early hours, leading to disruptions, and resorted to stone-pelting, damaging property and disrupting train services by blocking railway tracks.

As district police, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) looked to intervene, the situation escalated as protesters clashed with security personnel.

Police had to resort to firing warning shots and tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Some officials reportedly suffered injuries during the clashes.

According to officials, the protesters alleged lack of adequate transportation arrangements for candidates travelling to examination centres.

Emergency chains were repeatedly pulled, demanding special trains. Willing and peaceful candidates were not allowed to board trains.

“There were around 200-250 students who were preventing a train from departing. When police and railway security personnel tried to persuade them to move, some individuals began pelting stones. To prevent any loss of life or property, necessary action was taken,” Inspector General Jitendra Rana told IANS, adding that train services have since resumed.

Security has been tightened, with senior administrative and police officials are monitoring the situation at the station.

Patna District Magistrate Thiyagarajan said that the administration had arranged special special trains for exam candidates and two such services were already available at the station. He alleged that anti-social elements joined the protesters and created mayhem.
