Derek O’Brien Of TMC Suspended From Rajya Sabha For Remainder Of Monsoon Session
New Delhi: Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday suspended Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien for the remainder of the current Monsoon session of Parliament for “unruly behaviour”.
He had allegedly thrown a Rajya Sabha rule book at the Chair while opposing the electoral reforms Bill in the House.
Leader of the House Piyush Goyal moved a motion for his suspension “for continuously disturbing the proceedings of the House, disobeying the Chair and continuously creating the disturbance in the House”.
Sasmit Patra, who was in the Chair, said the TMC MP had raised a point of order and the deputy chairman had duly responded to it. A little later, O’Brien flung the rule book furiously in the direction of the Chair. “The rule book would have hit the chair, or secretary general or officials sitting at the table,” he said.
A massive ruckus followed his suspension order and the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till noon.
Derek O’Brien is the 13th member to be suspended from the Upper House.
