Rourkela: Police have begun an investigation into the alleged gang rape of an engineering girl student from Rourkela by six youths in Jharkhand.
The victim has been admitted to the Rourkela Government Hospital in a critical condition.
According to sources, the victim, a student of a private engineering college, was waiting at the railway station in Rourkela to go to her native place in Jharsuguda on December 31 to celebrate the New Year with her family when a youth, identifying himself as a friend of her brother, boarded her on a Jharkhand-bound train saying that due to repair work of the rail track, the train will be diverted through Jharkhand.
As the train stopped at Lotapahad station, the youth asked the girl to get down and board a bus to Jharsuguda. Later, he took her to a house on the pretext of having lunch and kept her confined in the house. The youth later called his 5-6 friends and they raped the girl for two days.
The accused later left the girl in a deserted area at Lotapahad on January 2. As the girl informed the matter to the locals, they accompanied her to the Chakradharpur where the she lodged a complaint with the local police. Police later sent the girl to Rourkela where she lodged a complaint with the Government Railway Police (GRP) on January 3.
She later returned to her house and narrated the ordeal to her family members.
The family members had also lodged a missing complaint with the Sector-3 Police Station in Rourkela on January 3.
The survivor has told the police that she can identify the house at Lotapahad where she was confined.
Police said that the victim, who is now undergoing treatment at the Rourkela Government Hospital, will be sent for a medical examination after her condition improves.
