Fact Check: Is Meat Being Banned In India?
The Lucknow administration on Monday banned slaughter, sale and transport of all kinds of meat, poultry and fish in the city by clamping Section 144 of the CrPC.
Similarly, in Vijayawada, two chicken shops and two mutton shops were sealed for violating an order on the ban of sale of meat in the district. The reason explained by VMC Veterinary wing chief Dr Ravichand, is to prevent large gatherings at Sunday markets.
Pork meat was banned in Assam on Monday after 1,900 pigs died of a mysterious virus across six districts in the state.
However, there is no nation-wide ban on consumption and sale of meat yet. Also, a newspaper clipping claiming Bihar Health Department finding coronavirus in poultry samples is completely false.
The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying has said that poultry is safe to consume and there is no evidence of “transmission of COVID-19 to humans” from chickens.
