New Delhi: A Delhi court has issued a notice to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on a petition seeking registration of an FIR against him over his alleged remarks on “Miya Muslims”.
Activist Harsh Mander had moved a revision plea against an April 20 order passed by a magistrate court, which refused to direct police to register an FIR against the BJP leader.
Additional Sessions Judge Sonu Agnihotri, who passed the order dated May 26, noted that the counsel for the petitioner referred to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ standard operating procedure (SOP) on Zero FIR and e-FIR in submissions before the court.
“In view of the submissions made by the counsel for the petitioner, issue notice of revision petition to the respondents on filing of appropriate reply for July 15, 2026,” order said.
The petitioner contended that Biswa Sarma’s remarks directed at “Miya Muslims” were provocative in nature and required criminal proceedings to be initiated.
The politically sensitive expression ‘Miya’ is used widely for Bengali-origin Muslims in Assam, a state where debates and discussions over identity, migration and citizenship continue.
