New Delhi: National Security Guard (NSG) commandos will assist other security forces in the fight against Left Wing Extremism (LWE), director general of the force Brighu Srinivasan has said.
“Personnel from the NSG’s Hyderabad regional hub is currently in Gadchiroli (Maharashtra) for anti-Naxal operations, and is working in conjunction with the state police. As per the directions of the home minister, NSG is also conducting a joint exercise with the District Reserve Guard (DRG) of Chhattisgarh,” Srinivasan said during inauguration of the 23rd NSG Counter-Terror International Seminar in New Delhi.
“NSG’s skill set is limited. Our operations are precise. If we are called and if there is intelligence, we operate. We are also learning during the anti-Naxal operations. If there is a need, we will also conduct operations (anti-Naxal),” the DG added.
The NSG has also been participating in counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir. In the later half of 2024, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced the permanent deployment of a specialised NSG unit in Jammu and Kashmir. This unit has been participating in joint operations since then.
Srinivasan also highlighted the NSG’s role during Operation Sindoor when the force defused an 8 kg payload of explosives dropped by a Pakistani drone at the Jammu airport. After cessation of operations, the NSG – which has been put on high alert since the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 – also conducted anti-hijacking drills at railway stations at Jammu.
By roping in the Black Cat commandos, the MHA has made its intentions clear to end Left Wing Extremism in the country by the end of March 2026.
The NSG DG also said that in January 2025, the force carried out a security audit and anti-hijacking exercises on inland water cruise liners. “On the directions of the MHA, NSG conducted the security audit of the inland water cruise liners. The teams conducted anti-hijack exercises in the cruise liners operating on the Ganga and Brahmaputra,” he said.
