Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Thursday proposed introduction of solid waste management as a subject in the school curriculum for a clean and safe environment.
State Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy mooted the proposal during a high-level meeting here while taking stock of solid waster disposal mechanism.
He advised senior officials at the meeting to include solid waste management in school syllabus.
The environmental impact of unscientific and improper disposal of solid waste can be measured from the fact that Odisha generates 2575 tonnes of such waste per day across 114 urban centres. Each household in these cities produce about 300 grams of solid waste daily.
Tripathy stressed the need to raise awareness among citizens about the proper disposal of solid waste.
Odisha would be among a handful of states where schools could impart lessons on promoting the best practices in solid waste management. Karnataka and Manipur governments have taken a lead in this direction.
