Puri: Police in Odiaha’s Puri thwarted an alleged robbery attempt, leading to an exchange of fire in which a history-sheeter sustained a gunshot injury to his leg.
Acting on credible intelligence that individuals with criminal antecedents were loitering near Shree Setu Road area and plotting a robbery, a team from Baselisahi police station reached the spot for verification. During the patrol, officers spotted a group of suspicious persons near Omkareshwar Temple. Upon noticing the police, the suspects attempted to flee on a motorcycle.
The motorcycle, which Chandan Bishnu Prasad Jena was riding, skidded during the escape attempt. After falling, the accused reportedly opened fire at the pursuing police party. In response, officers resorted to controlled retaliatory firing. Jena was hit by a bullet in his right leg and was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
According to police, Jena is a notorious criminal with multiple cases registered against him at various police stations in the region.
Further investigation is underway to identify other members of the gang and ascertain details of the planned robbery.
