Baripada: Police seized over 70 kg of cannabis worth around Rs seven lakh from a luxury car parked near a cremation ground in Jashipur area of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Monday.
The seizure was made after local residents informed the police about the suspicious vehicle.
According to sources, the luxury car was lying unattended for the past three days near the cremation ground at Gouda village under the jurisdiction of Jashipur Police Station.
The occupants of the vehicle are suspected to have fled after abandoning the car with the cannabis inside.
Locals grew suspicious after noticing the vehicle parked at the same location for several days.
After receiving the information, a police team from Jashipur visited the spot and conducted a search of the vehicle. During the inspection, officials recovered a large quantity of cannabis concealed inside the car.
Police said the seized cannabis weighed approximately 70 kg and was estimated at a market value of Rs 7 lakh.
Jashipur Police registered a case in connection with the seizure and launched an investigation to identify those involved in the alleged smuggling operation. Efforts are on to trace the persons responsible for transporting the contraband.
