New Delhi: At a time when Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is disintegrating in West Bengal following its electoral debacle, the former West Bengal chief minister attended Monday’s INDIA bloc meeting, which sought to mend and rebuild ties among partners so that a joint resistance can be put up against the BJP.
Leaders of 25 Opposition parties came together at the Constitution Club to deliberate on several issues of national importance.
In a show of bonhomie, Sonia Gandhi walked in alongside Mamata, Rahul Gandhi and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, NCP’s (Sharad Pawar) Supriya Sule and a clutch of Left leaders were among the others who were present.

Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Kharge said the leaders had reached a consensus on several issues like the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged “vote loot” and call for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s removal.
The parties decided to send a letter to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on irregularities in conducting SIR and the fairness of elections, which had been repeatedly raised by TMC, Congress and others in the lead-up to Assembly elections in four states and one UT in April.
“This letter will be handed over to CJI at the earliest,” Kharge said.
The group demanded the immediate resignation of Pradhan over NEET-CBSE exams irregularities.
“This is because during his tenure, there has been a betrayal of lakhs of youth in NEET and CBSE examinations. As a result, lakhs of youth are out on the streets today,” Kharge said.
The Opposition alliance demanded that the Union government convene an all-party meeting to discuss the “precarious current economic situation” in the country, besides unemployment, price rise, issues of farmers and oppressed sections of society.
The leaders of INDIA bloc also agreed to meet every two months, with the next conclave in Hyderabad in August.
“Parliamentary coordination will continue during the Monsoon Session, and a coordination meeting will be organised every morning in the Leader of Opposition’s office,” Kharge said.
