Bhubaneswar: Complementing the road-based electric vehicles (EVs) initiative, the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) is taking steps to replace traditional diesel boats with electric models at major tourist spots.
According to sources, tenders have been floated for the deployment of electric boats in the first phase, covering five key locations. This includes one 30-seater boat at Kolab, a 20-seater and a 10-seater at Hirakud, a 20-seater at Bhitarkanika, and an 8-seater at Barkul.These electric vessels are expected to significantly reduce pollution, lower operational costs, and offer visitors a smoother, quieter, and more pleasant experience. The boats will also feature CNG and solar-powered options for safety of the tourists.
This comes a day after Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who holds the Tourism portfolio, announced the introduction of EVs for tourists and locals commuting in and around the historic Dhauli heritage site.
Presiding over a high-level review meeting to assess the progress of various tourism infrastructure projects, Parida emphasised enhancing visitor experiences at key destinations while prioritising sustainability. She reviewed development initiatives along the Bhubaneswar-Puri corridor, including the beautification and integrated development of the Kapileswar and Sukhmeswar temples, Dasia Bauri Pitha, and other heritage sites.
Discussions focused on a comprehensive promotional plan for the Bhubaneswar-Puri corridor in view of the upcoming Rath Yatra, which is expected to draw a large influx of pilgrims and tourists. The Deputy CM directed officials to expedite proposed works in coordination with relevant departments, ensuring all necessary approvals and permissions are secured promptly.
