Sao Paulo: In a horrific incident, a 21-year-old woman fell nearly 150 feet to her death from a bridge during a bungee-jumping event in Brazil. Local media reported that it happened at the so-called “Skeleton Bridge” in Limeira, in the São Paulo state.
Event workers appeared to have failed to attach the safety cord before the woman was sent from the platform, witnesses told the military police, as reported by Brazilian news outlet g1.
While emergency responders were called to the scene, the woman was pronounced dead. She was identified the victim as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas by local media as reported by timesnow.in.
Workers are seen escorting her to the platform shortly before the jump in a video shared on social media. The footage was followed by people shouting about the rope after the fall, according to reports.
Rodrigues de Freitas had posted images and videos from the site before the incident, showing the event setup and participants using equipment on the bridge, g1 reported.
One post included a banner for “Entre Cordas”, the company reportedly associated with the activity. “Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge???” she wrote in a social media post before the jump.
Some organisers left the area following the incident, local news outlet Rápido no Ar reported. In a later report, the outlet said six people connected to the event had been detained by authorities, including five men and one woman.
Two suspects allegedly left the scene and were later located with the assistance of a police helicopter during a search of a wooded area near the bridge, a local rescue news account reported.
Rodrigues de Freitas’s fiancé was also present at the bridge, it was reported. He was taken for medical treatment after becoming unwell when informed of her death.
Brazil’s Civil Police is investigating the matter and will determine whether criminal charges will be brought against anyone involved in organising the event.
