Washington: Global leaders have welcomed the deal announced on Sunday by US and Iranian officials to end their war, stop the US blockade of Iran, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which could bring down energy prices once oil shipments resume through the vital waterway. The official signing ceremony is scheduled for June 19 in Switzerland, agencies reported.
A spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said: “The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement that the United States and Iran have agreed on a peace deal that provides for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as a framework for further negotiations. This represents a critical step towards the peaceful settlement of the conflict.”
Joint statement from E4 leaders Britain, France, Germany and Italy, states: “Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon. We stand ready to work with the U.S., Iran and the IAEA to this end.”
India
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, speaking at an inter-ministerial briefing in New Delhi, said India hopes the ceasefire will bring lasting peace to the region and ensure unimpeded freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Jaiswal stated that “India welcomes all steps towards peace and regional stability,” and expressed hope that this development would also bolster peace efforts in Ukraine.
Germany
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz praised the agreement as a major diplomatic success. “I welcome the agreement between the U.S. and Iran and congratulate US President Donald Trump and the Iranian side on this diplomatic breakthrough. This can pave the way towards a reinvigorated global economy and a more secure Middle East,” Merz said.
France
French President Emmanuel Macron demanded swift implementation without delay. “This agreement must enable the urgent and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz,” Macron said.
France and the UK are prepared to back restoring international maritime traffic. Macron also said the deal should trigger wider talks on Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programmes.
United Kingdom
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described it as “a hugely important step forward in ending the war, ensuring regional stability and re-opening the Strait of Hormuz.” He directly congratulated the mediators.
“I congratulate President Trump and the mediators from Pakistan, Qatar and elsewhere who have contributed to this breakthrough,” Starmer said.
He emphasized that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon. The UK is ready to assist mine-clearance operations alongside international partners.
Qatar
Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani warmly welcomed the agreement. He commended regional and international actors for enabling the understanding.
“We welcome the agreement reached on the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said on social media. He also said Qatar anticipates negotiations carried out in a “positive and constructive spirit”.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs termed it “an important step towards consolidating sustainable peace and promoting economic growth regionally and internationally.” The ministry also praised Pakistan and other stakeholders for helping reduce tensions.
Türkiye
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called it “an important development”. He voiced optimism about the future.
“I sincerely hope that this news, which the entire world has long needed, will pave the way for the establishment of a lasting environment of peace and security in our region,” Erdogan said.
Still, he warned against provocations and thanked Pakistan, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia for their diplomatic efforts.
