New Delhi: At the meeting held by leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc in New Delhi on Monday, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the country’s foreign policy was compromised.
Leaders of several opposition parties on Monday stressed unity within the INDIA bloc. They called for the need to safeguard democratic values and address issues related to people’s livelihood, reported HT.
Opposition leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge of the Congress, Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress, Akhilesh Yadav of Samajwadi Party, Tejashwi Yadav of RJD, Omar Abdullah of National Conference and Mehbooba Mufti of PDP, besides Left leaders attended the meeting.
NCP(SP) leader Supriya Sule, CPI(M)’s John Brittas, CPI’s D Raja and leaders of some smaller parties were also part of the meeting. Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Uddhav Thackeray attended it virtually.
Kharge alleged that India’s foreign policy had been “severely compromised” and claimed that many citizens were being deprived of voting rights due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. He further criticised the handling of examinations, saying the aspirations of millions of young people were being undermined by mismanagement.
The alliance is expected to deliberate on its future course of action and formulate a coordinated strategy to challenge the BJP on national issues ahead of the next state elections and the 2029 Lok Sabha polls. According to reports, the bloc has decided to conduct frequent meetings, with the next being scheduled on August 8.
While Congress leaders maintained that the bloc remains united, some prominent allies stayed away from the gathering. The DMK and Aam Aadmi Party did not attend, with the DMK’s absence linked to its strained relations with Congress following political developments in Tamil Nadu.
