Amritsar: The family of slain human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra has endorsed the OTT release of his long-delayed biographical film, now titled Satluj, with his widow, Paramjit Kaur Khalra, stating that the version released has retained its “original spirit and truth” despite years of controversy over censorship.

In a statement posted on X on Saturday, Paramjit Kaur said the family had approved the version currently streaming and clarified that it was the same original cut first screened for them. According to a Hindustan Times report, she expressed satisfaction that, despite “immense pressure and repeated attempts” to alter the film, its essence had been preserved.

The film, directed by Honey Trehan and starring Diljit Dosanjh as Jaswant Singh Khalra, premiered globally on the OTT platform Zee5 after a prolonged certification battle that delayed its release for nearly three years. Actress Geetanjali Kulkarni portrays Paramjit Kaur Khalra, while Arjun Rampal and Suvinder Vicky feature in key roles.

The project, originally titled Punjab ’95, had faced objections from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which reportedly sought around 120 cuts. Director Honey Trehan had maintained that implementing the suggested changes would strip the film of its historical and artistic integrity, as they included removing references to Jaswant Singh Khalra, the Punjab Police, custodial violence and other key elements of the narrative.

Addressing speculation over possible edits, Paramjit Kaur praised the filmmakers for remaining committed to the story. She said the film authentically portrays her husband’s efforts to expose the illegal cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies and his campaign to bring the truth before the courts and the world.

Trehan has stated that the only change made to the film was its title, while Diljit Dosanjh also asserted that the version released is identical to the one originally completed. The actor said he would not have promoted the film had even a single cut been made.

Jaswant Singh Khalra documented alleged illegal cremations and enforced disappearances during Punjab’s militancy period. He was abducted outside his Amritsar residence in 1995 and later murdered. Several Punjab Police personnel were subsequently convicted in connection with his abduction and killing.

Paramjit Kaur expressed hope that Satluj would honour her husband’s legacy and encourage audiences across the world to reflect on the values of truth, justice, accountability and human dignity.
