Jagatsinghpur: The Odisha government has taken concrete steps toward establishing a new Government Medical College in Jagatsinghpur district by directing the district administration to initiate land acquisition and alienation processes.
Around 28 acre private land and 19 acre government land have been identified at Neepur village under Jagatsinghpur Tehsil for establishment of the medical college.
In an official communication addressed to Jagatsinghpur Collector, the Health and Family Welfare department on Friday emphasised the need to record identified land in its favour before proceeding with the medical college project. “The identified land, both government and private, is required to be recorded in favour of the H&FW Department before initiating the process for establishment of the government medical college,” read the letter.
The Collector has been instructed to start the acquisition of the 28.32 acres of private land under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 (LARR Act). Simultaneously, necessary steps should be taken for the alienation of the 19.87 acres of government land in favour of the department.
The letter further directed the district administration to furnish an action plan, the current status of the identified land parcels, and timelines for completing the acquisition and alienation processes at the earliest to facilitate smooth progress of the project.
The move is part of the state government’s broader initiative to set up new medical colleges in multiple districts to enhance healthcare infrastructure and medical education across Odisha.
In February while laying the foundation stone for a medical college and hospital in Nabarangpur district, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had announced regarding the establishment of medical college in Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal and Bhadrak. Three medical college and hospitals have already been made operation at Jajpur, Kandhamal and Talcher within 20 months of his assuming power, he noted.
