Ghaziabad: The prime accused in the stabbing death of 17-year-old Surya Pratap Chauhan was shot dead in a late-night police encounter on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Asad, had allegedly murdered Surya Chauhan on Bakrid. He had been on the run since then and carried a reward of Rs 50,000.
The Encounter
Acting on specific intelligence that Asad was planning to collect money from associates in Khoda area before fleeing the city, teams from the Khoda and Indirapuram police stations laid a trap. When Asad arrived on a motorcycle with an unidentified aide, police attempted to intercept them. Asad allegedly opened fire on the officers, prompting retaliatory firing. He sustained critical gunshot injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
A police officer was also injured in the exchange but is reported to be in stable condition.
Police recovered the motorcycle used by the accused and a country-made pistol from the site. The second individual managed to escape, and a combing operation is underway to trace and apprehend him.
Background of the Murder
Surya Pratap Chauhan was allegedly attacked with a knife by Asad and his aides in Ghaziabad’s Khoda area on May 28, the day of Bakrid. The critically injured teenager was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
“Five individuals were named as accused in this case. Immediately after the incident, the police arrested three of the accused, while the main accused, Asad, remained at large. Several police teams were constituted to apprehend him, and a reward of Rs 50,000 was announced for his capture,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (City/Trans-Hindon) Dhaval Jaiswal told the media.
Continuous search operations and barricading were intensified based on fresh inputs about Asad’s movements, he added.

Following news of the encounter, Surya’s mother expressed partial relief but demanded similar action against all those responsible. “I have only seen the encounter of one person… I will be satisfied after I see the picture. The encounter of others should also happen like this. Seven people did this to my son… Bulldozers should run over everyone’s houses,” she said.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya had earlier assured that the killers would not be spared and would face the strictest punishment under the law.
