Jagatsinghpur: Several areas in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district were flooded on Sunday after breaches at two places in Machagaon canal embankment.
The breaches occurred near Daleighai and Tarikund in the district, submerging Hanumantabrahmapur village, nearby farmlands and a portion of Cuttack-Jagatsinghpur road.
While a breach of 15 feet has been detected near Daleighai, the one at Tarikund is about 20 feet long, sources said.
As a result, the market area at Tarikund has been inundated and knee-deep water was flowing on Cuttack-Jagatsinghpur road. Movement of vehicular traffic was disrupted on the road for some time because of the breaches.
According to Assistant Executive Engineer of Balia Irrigation Division, Rajkishore Sahu, the breach was due to overflow of water in Machagaon canal. Due to some problem with Taladanda canal, excess water from Cuttack were released in Machagaon canal.
Steps have been taken to regulate the water at Biribati and the breaches are being plugged by using sand packets. The situation is under control and the breached embankments will be sealed soon, he said.
It may be noted here that Taladanda and Machhagaon canals pass through Jagatsinghpur districts for irrigation purposes.
