Bhubaneswar: Odisha police have arrested a 45-year-old man for alleged Rs 21 lakh fraud by promising a loco pilot position in the Indian Railways.
The accused, identified as Gadadhar Nath of Olatpur in Cuttack district, was apprehended from Aska area in Ganjam district on Thursday.
Aska SDPO SR Pradhan said the complainant had transferred the entire amount to the accused through multiple online transactions between 2024 and 2025. To build credibility, Nath allegedly provided forged job offer and joining letters purportedly issued by the Eastern Railway in Kolkata.
The deception was unravelled when the complainant’s son travelled to Kolkata to report for duty. The subsequent investigation revealed that the documents, lacking any specific name, address, or verifiable details, had been fabricated to mislead the family.
After the fraud came to light, the complainant confronted Nath, who initially promised to refund the money within six months. When payment was not made, the victim visited Nath’s residence again, only to be allegedly abused and chased away with a sword. Following a compliant at Dhusuri police station, a compromise was reached on May 12 under which Nath agreed to repay the sum within four months and immediately returned Rs 3 lakh.
However, he allegedly failed to honour the agreement and abused the complainant again, leading to an FIR at Aska police station and his subsequent arrest.
