Sambalpur: A tragic road accident in Odisha’s Sambalpur claimed the lives of a mother and her daughter on Tuesday morning.
The victims have been identified as Sunita Nag and her daughter Smriti Nag of Gandhinagar Padar.
According to sources, the fatal mishap occurred at around 6.40 am near Gandhinagar area when the duo was traveling on a scooter to Samaleswari Nursing Home, where the mother was employed. The scooter skidded on a muddy, slush-filled road, causing them to fall over, after which they were tragically crushed by a passing truck.
Locals and eyewitnesses pointed out that the road conditions had become severely hazardous due to ongoing silt and mud extraction operations in neighbouring Balangir, which left a thick layer of slush on the main thoroughfare, making it highly slippery.
As news of the double fatality spread, tension flared up in the locality, leading to the deployment of adequate police personnel at the scene to maintain law and order. While the bodies have been sent for postmortem, a manhunt has been launched to trace the vehicle and its driver, who fled soon after the accident.
