Bhubaneswar: Nandankanan Zoological Park, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, saw an unprecedented surge in visitors on Sunday, marking commencement of Raja festivities, as families flocked to the popular attraction amid the three-day celebration of womanhood, fertility, and the onset of the monsoon.
According to zoo authorities, 27,192 visitors explored the zoological park, while the adjacent State Botanical Garden (SBG) welcomed 2,188 people. This combined turnout of 29,380 significantly surpassed last year’s first-day figure of 24,856 visitors, setting a new record for the venue.
The Raja festival, also known as Raja Parba, is a vibrant traditional celebration in Odisha honouring the earth and womanhood. It typically spans June 14 to 16, with families enjoying swings (Raja Doli), traditional sweets like poda pitha, new clothes, and rest from daily chores. This cultural backdrop drew large numbers of tourists and locals to Nandankanan, turning the zoo into a festive hub. New attractions at the zoo also contributed to the heightened interest this year.
To ensure a smooth and safe experience, zoo officials made extensive preparations. As many as 104 security personnel were deployed, along with 31 drinking water kiosks. In addition to regular staff, at least 30 volunteers were engaged to help manage the large crowds.
The Nandankanan Zoological Park and State Botanical Garden will remain open on June 15, the second day of the festival, which coincides with Raja Sankranti, despite usually being closed on Mondays. However, both sites will be closed on Tuesday, June 16, to compensate for the adjusted schedule.
