Bhubaneswar: In a major development in Balianta murder case, the post-mortem report of GRP constable Soumya Ranjan Swain, who was killed in a daylight mob attack on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar last month, has revealed that severe head injuries primarily led to his death.
According to the report, Swain sustained deep injuries at 21 places on his body. The post-mortem found severe trauma to the front, back and middle portions of his head, which led to blood clotting and swelling in the brain. Blood clots were also detected in his lungs.
There were clear indications that Soumya was repeatedly assaulted with a hard and heavy object, resulting in multiple serious wounds. The nature and extent of the injuries suggest a brutal attack prior to his death.
Sources said samples have been collected and sent for forensic examination to determine whether Swain had consumed any intoxicating substance before the incident.
It may be recalled that Swain died following a mob attack on May 7. It was claimed that Swain and his associate, Om Prakash Rout, were travelling on a motorcycle when they collided with a scooter carrying two women.
It was further alleged that Swain assaulted the women and attempted to rape one of them, triggering outrage among locals and passersby.
An angry crowd allegedly attacked Swain at the spot, leaving him critically injured. He later succumbed to his injuries. Videos of the assault had gone viral on social media.
Police have registered two separate cases in connection with the incident. One case relates to the alleged murder of Swain, while the other concerns the alleged attempt to rape a woman.
Altogether 18 persons have so far been arrested for their alleged involvement in the mob assault that led to Swain’s death. The investigation into both cases is underway.
