New York: US President Donald Trump drew boos from the crowd before the NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden on Monday, with his presence prompting exceptionally tight security around the historic Manhattan arena.
Fans heckled the Republican president when his image appeared on the arena screens during the national anthem.
Authorities increased security measures for the visit, prohibiting people without tickets from coming within several blocks of Madison Square Garden. Officials also barred watch parties directly outside the venue — a departure from the first two playoff games, when fans gathered in large, jubilant groups.
Officials advised ticket holders to arrive well before the scheduled 8:30 pm tip-off to pass through airport-style security checks. Bags were not allowed inside the arena.
City police urged people to celebrate the Knicks while avoiding the immediate MSG area if they did not have tickets.
Visible Protection
AFP journalists observed a roughly 10-foot fence encircling parts of Madison Square Garden and a heavy presence of Secret Service agents assigned to protect the president.
Those agents, some of whom heavily armed, worked alongside hundreds of NYPD officers as crowds collected on nearby streets and at public viewing spots across the city.
Local Reaction
Some New Yorkers and Democratic officials criticized the disruption caused by the presidential visit.
“During one of the best moments NYC has enjoyed in decades, (Trump) makes it all about himself. Trump should LEAVE US ALONE! He’s not wanted here,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote on X.
As the presidential motorcade moved toward Madison Square Garden, a number of protesters on the street held signs opposing Trump. At least two people raised their middle fingers toward the convoy.
A Knicks fan, Anthony Pulley, 43, told AFP that while he found the restrictions frustrating because they dampened watch-party celebrations, he still thought it was cool that Trump chose to attend.
“I think it sucks. I think it really put a damper on all the watch parties. But it’s pretty cool he wants to show up and be a part of it,” he said.
Game Atmosphere
The Knicks entered the contest with a commanding 2–0 lead in the best-of-seven series against the San Antonio Spurs, pursuing the franchise’s first NBA title since 1973. Their deep playoff run has generated intense enthusiasm across the city.
Ticket Costs & Protection
Madison Square Garden was sold out despite face-value tickets being out of reach for many locals, with numerous celebrities visible courtside. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani told reporters he paid almost $1,000 for his seats.
The Secret Service included counter-drone technology in its security plan. Special Agent Matt McCool said the agency’s main aim was to let attendees enjoy the game safely while carrying out its protective duties for the president.
Earlier Visits
Trump, a lifelong Knicks supporter and a native New Yorker, previously visited Madison Square Garden in November 2024 to watch a UFC event after his election victory and has used the venue for campaign events.
Safety Concerns
Police sought to minimize concerns about broader public safety after a stabbing late on Sunday at Penn Station — which lies beneath the arena complex — left six people injured. US outlets reported that authorities described the male suspect as emotionally disturbed and found no links to terrorism.
